Based in Phoenix, AZ, Spencer Brand is an active pedagogue, composer, freelance trumpeter and soloist. Brand teaches in the greater Phoenix area and serves as an Artist-in-Residence at Brophy College Preparatory. His focus in pedagogy is to help the student achieve the most effortless and beautiful sound possible.
Spencer is one of the newest members of the Phoenix Brass Collective, a brass choir made up of some of Phoenix’s top freelance brass players. He has also performed with the Chandler Symphony Orchestra, Salt River Brass Band and many others as principal trumpet/cornet.
Active as a composer, Brand has been commissioned to write music for various performers including the University of Minnesota Symphonic Band, Winona State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and others. His music is often inspired and explores Minnesota nature, and he has presented on nature in Edvard Grieg’s music.
During the summer of 2018, Spencer Brand performed in the Czech Republic as a part of the Prague Summer Nights Festival Orchestra, playing in the Estates Theatre and Rudolfinum. This tour has inspired his research of blacklisted Czech composers who wrote for trumpet during Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia.
Spencer Brand is a doctoral student at Arizona State University where he holds a Trumpet Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Mr. Brand received his Master of Music in Trumpet Performance and Composition at Arizona State and holds a BMus in Trumpet Performance with a Management Minor from the University of Minnesota. Brand is an active member of the International Trumpet Guild and the Society of Composers, Inc. His teachers include Joe Burgstaller, David Hickman, David Baldwin, Robert Dorer, Ladislav Kozderka, and Albert Moore.
